"Extremely kind" and "an incredible human being", poet Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by Immigration and Customs Enforcement

It’s “yet another clear example that fear and violence, unfortunately, have become commonplace” in the U.S.

Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, she was a poet awarded by the Academy of American Poets and “an incredible human being”. Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, had moved to Minneapolis a year ago with her partner and youngest six-year-old son, the victim’s mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“She was extremely kind” and “took care of people all her life”, says her mother. Which sums up his daughter’s death like this: “Stupid.”

The victim’s father, Tim Ganger, told the Washington Post that Renee “had a good but difficult life.” And: “He was a wonderful person.”

In her social media biography, Renee Good described herself as “a poet, writer, wife and mother”. He studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He received the poetry prize from the Academy of American Poets for university students, in 2020, for his work “On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs”.

His death was “yet another clear example that fear and violence, unfortunately, have become commonplace in our nation,” wrote Brian Hamphill, president of the university, in a statement sent to the Washington Post.

Several state leaders said Good was at the scene of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation as a “legal observer.” Videos published of the incident show an ICE agent shooting Renee’s vehicle three times.

Jacob Frey, president of the Minneapolis Chamber, says the victim was taken to Hannepin County Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. “Renee was a resident of our town who was looking out for her neighbors this morning [na quarta-feira] when his life was taken at the hands of the federal government,” the Minneapolis City Council said in a statement, demanding the federal immigration service leave the city.

The victim’s mother assured the Minnesota Star Tribune that Renee was “not part of anything” that involved challenging ICE’s actions.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, classified the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism” against immigration agents and stated that Renee “used her vehicle as a weapon” to try to “run them over”. He also justified that the shots at Renee Good’s vehicle were “defensive”.

Donald Trump defended Noem’s statements and posted on the social network Truth Social that Renee was “obstructing and resisting” the operations of ICE agents.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who ran as the Democratic Party candidate for vice president of the United States in the 2024 presidential election, blamed the Trump administration for the incident and offered his condolences to Good’s family – and promised that he will “seek accountability and justice.”

The FBI is investigating the case.
