El Periódico

The five Spaniards released by the Chavista regime in Venezuela They will arrive in Barajas at 1:15 p.m. if everything goes as planned. They are in good physical condition, although thinner, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who spoke with them last night.

There are hopes that the release of these prisoners, considered politicians by Spain, will continue. “We are waiting for there to be another release, specifically a person we are following. It could be in the next few hours,” the minister added.

Yesterday, the president of the Venezuelan Parliament (AN) and chief negotiator of Madurism, Jorge Rodriguezannounced the release of “a significant number of people,” including Venezuelans and foreigners. Among them, five spanishone of them with dual nationality, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The They are the Basques Andrés Martínez Adasme y José María Basoa Valdovinosthe canary Miguel Moreno Dapenathe Valencian Ernesto Gorbe Cardona and the Spanish-Venezuelan human rights defender Rocío San Miguel. The first two were accused of having a relationship with the CNI and of being involved in an alleged plot against Nicolás Maduro.

Everything happens after the United States attacked Venezuela and kidnapped its de facto president, Nicolás Maduro, to take him to be tried for alleged narcoterrorism in the United States.

Zapatero mediation

“We had many months talking with the Venezuelan authorities for his release. It is already a reality,” said the head of Spanish diplomacy in an interview on RTVE. “Yesterday, as they were leaving the prisons, they were gathering at the residence of the Spanish ambassador.”

The Spanish-Venezuelan Rocío San Miguel asked the minister “to convey all her gratitude to President Pedro Sánchez and the former president, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.” The former president participated in the negotiations for the release of the Spanish prisoners, as sources close to him confirm to this newspaper.

Looking ahead to what is coming in the Caribbean country, where some 150,000 Spaniards live and from which nearly 400,000 residents in Spain come, the minister has defended maintaining contacts with the government in Caracas, now temporarily in the hands of Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez. Remember that the Government also speaks with the Venezuelan opposition, in particular with Edmundo González, who part of the international community considers the legitimate winner of the July 2024 elections.

For the moment, the releases of prisoners are, for Spain, “a positive step” by the new Venezuelan Executive. It is about “a new stage” which, according to Albares, is opening in the country.

Spain’s objective is to promote a broad dialogue for a solution “genuinely Venezuelan” no solutions “imposed from outside” and, particularly, without the use of force and always within the framework of international law against the “law of the strongest”, the minister concluded, in reference to the assault ordered by US President Donald Trump.
