A court in France on Friday gave a six-month suspended sentence to a 74-year-old man who threw an egg at the leader of the far-right National Union (RN) party, Jordan Bardella, last November. RN is considering appealing against this ruling, France 3 television reported.
As AFP added, the convicted retired farmer must pay a fine of 1,000 euros to the court, an additional 500 euros to Bardell as compensation for non-pecuniary damage and 600 euros for the services of Bardell’s lawyer.
The convicted man apologized for his actions. He acknowledged that his act was “violent”, but he explained that he wanted to get voters in France to take over, because “when (RN politicians) get into power, it will be too late.” The incident occurred on November 29, 2025, at the launch of Bardell’s new book in Moissac, southern France.
AFP reported that the convicted senior also committed a similar act in 2022, when he threw an egg at another far-right candidate, politician and columnist Éric Zemmour, during the presidential election.
Bardella has a chance to become the RN candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The candidacy of RN leader Marine Le Pen is in jeopardy: the court forbade her from serving in elected positions and running for office in the case of embezzlement. Appeal proceedings in this case begin next week, and a verdict is expected in the summer.
If Le Pen fails to overturn the verdict, only 30-year-old Bardella could run in her place in RN colors. The current president, Emmanuel Macron, after two consecutive terms of office, can no longer run for re-election according to the law.
