Iran has raised its tone against the United States and Israel amid the escalation of national protests that are now entering their third week and have left at least 116 people dead, according to activists. The President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, warned this morning that American forces and Israeli territory would become “legitimate targets” if Washington carries out an offensive against the Islamic Republic.

In a session broadcast on state TV, deputies rushed to the plenary shouting “Death to America!”, while Qalibaf praised the actions of the police and the Revolutionary Guard, especially the Basij militia, for having “stood firm”. He then made direct threats. “The people of Iran must know that we will deal with them in the most severe manner and punish those who are arrested. In the event of an attack on Iran, both the occupied territory and all American military centers, bases and ships in the region will be our legitimate targets,” he endorsed.
