Soap opera author Manoel Carlos dies at age 95

Creator of iconic characters such as “Helenas” was hospitalized in Rio undergoing treatment for Parkinson’s Disease

The author of novels from Globo Manoel Carlos died this Saturday (10 January 2026), aged 95, in Rio de Janeiro. The information was confirmed on the profile of the production company Boa Palavra, on Instagram, managed by the author’s daughter, Júlia Almeida. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The author was admitted to the Copa Star hospital, in Copacabana, Rio, undergoing treatment for Parkinson’s Disease. According to the family, the wake will be closed and restricted to family and close friends. In the publication, the family thanked them for their expressions of affection and requested respect and privacy at this delicate time.

Maneco, as he was known, started in Globo in 1972, as general director of “Fantástico”. Carlos has also worked for several Brazilian broadcasters, working as an author, producer and even actor. His artistic career began on stage at the age of 17.

Over the years, his soap operas were marked by Rio de Janeiro as a setting – and also as a character – and by addressing conflicts within the Brazilian family nucleus.

Another striking feature of his work was the “Helena’s”. From “Baila Comigo” (1981) to “Em Família” (2014), the characters portrayed mothers whose love for their children overcame any challenge.

In addition to being an author, he was also a writer and director. He leaves 2 daughters: actress Júlia Almeida and soap opera writer Maria Carolina.
