As part of the American operation in Syria, the Jordanian Air Force attacked the targets of the terrorist organization Islamic State, the Jordanian army said on Sunday. TASR writes about it according to AP and AFP agencies. Saturday’s attacks “were coordinated with partners within the international coalition … to neutralize the capabilities of terrorist groups and prevent them from reorganizing,” the military explained.
The attacks were part of Operation Hawkeye Strike “in direct response to the deadly ISIS attack on US and Syrian forces in the Syrian city of Palmyra” Dec. 13, US Central Command (CENTCOM) on the X Network said Saturday.
Two American soldiers and one civilian interpreter died in the attack. Following their killing, President Donald Trump said it was an attack against the United States and Syria and that the US would respond “a very serious retaliation”.
In November, Syria became the 90th member country of the US-led coalition against the Islamic State. At one time, the organization controlled about 40 percent of Iraq and about a third of Syria. A military coalition began fighting IS in 2014. Currently, IS is considered militarily defeated, but according to the US, it still has approximately 2,500 active fighters in Iraq and Syria.
