Trump briefed on plans to intervene in Iran, sources say

US President Donald Trump is weighing a range of possible military options in Iran after violent protests gripped the country, two US officials told CNN.

He considers making good on his recent threats to attack the country if it uses lethal force against the Iranian people.

Trump has been briefed in recent days on different intervention plans, officials told CNN, as violence in the country has already resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests.

Some of the discussions also included options that do not involve the direct use of U.S. military force, one of the officials said.

The president has not yet made a final decision on intervention, officials said, but is seriously considering whether to act as Iran’s death toll continues to rise.

The US-based HRANA (Human Rights Activists News Agency) news agency reports that 466 people have been killed since protests broke out in the country’s 31 provinces two weeks ago.

It remains uncertain whether HRANA’s count fully reflects the scale of the victims, given the nationwide blockade of internet access and telephone lines imposed by authorities.

“Iran is seeing FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” Trump posted on social media on Saturday (10). “The US is ready to help!!!”
