The 90-year-old Palestinian leader went to Istishari Hospital, in Ramallah, in the capital of the West Bank, to undergo “usual control” medical examinations.
The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, has already left the hospital in Ramallah, after undergoing “routine” medical examinations this Monday morning, the results of which were “reassuring”, reported the official Palestinian agency Wafa.
In a brief statement, Wafa reported the departure of the 90-year-old Palestinian leader from Istishari Hospital, in Ramallah, in the capital of the West Bank, where he had gone to undergo “usual control” medical examinations.
Several Israeli media reported today that Abbas had been transferred “emergently” to a hospital, but Wafa later indicated that the leader of the Palestinian Authority was just undergoing routine examinations.
Abbas assumed the presidency of the Palestinian National Authority (ANP) on January 15, 2005, after winning the elections with a large majority, following the death of the historic leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Yasser Arafat.
His mandate was initially scheduled for four years, but since then no new elections have been held, mainly due to the deep internal divisions between Fatah (Abbas’s political party) and the radical Hamas movement, which has controlled Gaza since 2006, and the blockade of the Palestinian parliament.
