Retail sales grow 1% in November, says IBGE

The result was above the projections of financial agents, who expected an increase of up to 0.5% in the month

Retail sales grew 1.0% in November compared to October, in the seasonally adjusted series. The result was above the estimates of financial agents, who expected an increase of up to 0.5% in the month. The median projection was +0.2%. November is marked by being the month of Black Friday.

The (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released the result this Thursday (15 January 2026). Here is the document (PDF – 882 kB).

Retail sales rose for the 2nd consecutive month in November. The increase had been 0.5% in October compared to September.

Compared to November 2025, in the series without seasonal adjustment, retail sales volume increased by 1.3%. The accumulated result for the year reached 1.5%. In 12 months, the expansion rate was also 1.5%.

The IBGE said that 7 of the 8 activities surveyed registered an increase from October to November. They are:

  • office, IT and communication equipment and material (4.1%);
  • furniture and household appliances (2.3%);
  • pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (2.2%);
  • other articles for personal and domestic use (2.0%);
  • books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (1.5%);
  • hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, drinks and tobacco (1.0%);
  • fuels and lubricants (0.6%).

The only activity to record a drop in November was fabrics, clothing and footwear (-0.8%).

EXPANDED RETAIL TRADE

Extended retail trade includes:

  • vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces;
  • building material;
  • wholesale specialized in food, beverage and tobacco products.

According to IBGE, extended retail trade rose 0.7% in November compared to October. Compared to November 2024, it registered a drop of 0.3%.

The accumulated result for the year was negative (-0.3%) and the 12-month index had a drop (-0.2%).
