The motto among Hollywood directors is “One for the studios, one for me.” For few people this calculation has worked out as well as for Ryan Coogler. His personal project Sinners Not only was it a hit with audiences, but with 16 Oscar chances, it is now also the most nominated film in the history of the Academy Awards. Coogler is nominated not only as a producer for best picture and as a director, but also for his own original screenplay. The $100 million genre-mix film is neither an adaptation nor a sequel – a rarity in the risk-averse film business these days.
