Extreme weather on Thursday night completely paralyzed the operation of Berlin International Airport (BER). Due to the heavy ice that turned the runways and operating areas into dangerous “glass”, the airport management had to suspend all incoming and outgoing flights until at least Friday morning.
On Thursday evening, the international airport in the German capital Berlin (BER) temporarily suspended incoming and outgoing flights due to ice. The airport announced this through a spokeswoman. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
- Berlin Airport temporarily stopped all flights on Thursday.
- The reason was the ice and concern for the safety of passengers.
- The airport plans to review the situation on Friday morning.
- During the day, 35 flights were canceled and others were delayed.
Flight delays and cancellations
“All surfaces are like glass. There is a danger to life and health,” the spokeswoman said, adding that it was still unclear when operations would resume, but flights would remain suspended overnight. “We will review the situation on Friday morning,” she added.
During Thursday, BER experienced a number of weather-related issues, leading to flight delays and cancellations. Initially, no planes could take off in the morning because of the freezing rain, taking up to an hour each time to de-ice. The first machine subsequently took off in the later hours of the morning.
The airport canceled 35 flights during the day
As a result, the flight schedule saw significant delays and numerous flight cancellations, while passengers had to endure long waiting times. According to airport sources, 35 of the 180 planned departures were completely canceled in the morning, several dozen more later.
The German Meteorological Service (DWD) warned of increased risks due to ice in western and northwestern Brandenburg on Thursday evening.
