A mop is one of the basic home appliances. It consists of a stick and an absorbent tip or steam head, and is used to wash and disinfect surfaces without having to bend down. This is a very useful tool that enables effective cleaning of tiles and parquet floors.
Due to the fact that the mop comes into contact with dirt, you also need to keep it clean. What to do when it has become visibly old and starts to dirty the floor instead of cleaning it? We have home remedies for this.
An old mop most often ends up in the trash when it starts to smell bad and instead of collecting dust and dirt, it leaves unsightly streaks. However, there is no need to invest in new equipment. You can clean up an old mop so that it smells good again and serves its purpose properly.
Most people forget that the mop – which is used for cleaning – also needs to be cleaned regularly. It comes into contact with dirt, detergents and bacteria. It is also negatively affected by the fact that after washing the floors it remains wet and often ends up in a bucket, where it dries very slowly. It turns into a habitat for fungi and germs.
We don’t need expensive cleaning products to keep it tidy. All you need is salt and baking soda, products that everyone probably has at home.
Baking soda and salt are mixtures that will cope perfectly with unpleasant odors and dirt deposited on the mop. Mix baking soda and salt in a 1:1 ratio, for example 3 or 4 tablespoons of each product. Then we sprinkle the finished mixture on the tip of the mop and rub it to penetrate deeply into the fibers.
After waiting 10 minutes, rinse the mop very thoroughly under running hot water. We can also throw the tip into the washing machine for a short program, if possible. There won’t even be a trace of bad smell and pollution left. The mop will be ready for use again and will clean the floors perfectly. Sometimes – in case of heavy dirt – cleaning with a mixture of soda and salt should be repeated.
