Centrals call CUT for unified Labor Day act – 02/10/2026 – Panel

Union leaders try to convince the CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores) to participate in the unified event in São Paulo, arguing the importance of the event for President Lula’s re-election campaign.

The demonstration could take place in Campo de Bagatelle square, in the north of São Paulo, just like last year.

The largest trade union center in the country, . Last year, the event organized by Força Sindical, UGT, CTB, CSB, Nova and Pública drew ten Volkswagen vehicles. CUT was only as a guest.

“In an election year, the participation and presence of all the centrals is even more important. Força Sindical will work towards the unified 1st of May”, says the general secretary of Força Sindical, João Carlos Gonçalves, known as Juruna.

When defending the participation of the CUT, Adilson Araújo, from the CTB (Central dos Trabalhadores do Brasil), lists measures taken by the Lula government, such as the exemption from and the policy of readjusting the minimum wage.

“I think these factors are decisive for achieving a united May 1st with CUT together”, says Araújo. “We have to convince ourselves that the political battle of 2026 will be epic and historic. We must fulfill our role in organizing the struggles of the working class.”

President of the UGT (General Union of Workers), Ricardo Patah recalls that, in the 2022 election, Lula was elected with a narrow victory – the PT member obtained 50.9% of the valid votes and Bolsonaro, 49.1%.

“In the last election, we worked hard and it was a victory with a small difference. Bolsonaro wanted to exterminate the union movement, a pillar of democracy, while Lula listened to us, approving our demands”, says Patah.

When contacted, CUT did not respond.
