Even during sex, college students don't put down their cell phones

More than a third of college students in the USA admit to using their cell phones during sex, a study reveals. And it’s not to “turn the record”.

More than one in three college students in the United States admit that they have picked up the cell phone during sexual intercourse, not to change songs or answer a call, but to send messages, watch videos or even scroll while the sexual act was taking place.

The conclusion results from a recent survey, released by . It was carried out with the help of two popular applications on university campuses — YikYak and Sidechat.

Approximately 35% admitted to having used the device in the middle of a sexual encounter, according to a survey of responses from around 100,000 North American students, aged 18 or over.

Furthermore, almost 23% of participants stated that they had sexual relations with their roommate present in the same space; and, considering the idea that young people only speak through messages, 72% said they had met their current or most recent partner in person and not online.

The release of the survey comes at a time when there is debate about a possible “sex drought” (drop in sexual activity) among young adults. But, according to data from the National Survey of Family Growth, cited by , has increased the proportion of people aged 22 to 34 who report no sexual activity.

In this age group, around 10% of men and 7% of women say they remain virgins. An analysis by the Institute for Family Studies also reports a growth in sexlessness (young people who do not have sex): the indicator has almost doubled among young men over the last decade.

Part of the generation that currently attends higher education went through formative years marked by confinements and remote social life during the pandemic, the authors of the research highlight as one of the justifying factors for the results.
