According to the department, commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman have long been at risk of being boarded, questioned, detained or seized by Iranian forces.
“The U.S. government is continually assessing the maritime security situation in the region to identify and differentiate threats, safeguard freedom of navigation, ensure the free flow of commerce, and protect American vessels, personnel, and interests,” he added.

If approached by Iranian forces, the agency advises US-flagged vessels to provide the vessel’s name and flag state, as well as not forcibly resist a possible boarding by the group.
