Do you use Gmail as your main e-mail box and do you have other accounts connected to it? Then you shouldn’t miss the change that will affect millions of users this year. Since 2026, working with other people’s mailboxes in Gmail has changed significantly.
Many people liked Gmail precisely because it was able to act as a central signpost for multiple email accounts. Work address, private e-mail and other mailboxes with other providers could be conveniently managed in one place. But he decided to close this chapter and, starting this year, he is gradually turning off the functions that users were used to. The change is taking place quietly, but its effects can be very unpleasant.
The end of the convenience that users were used to
As of 2026, Gmail has definitively discontinued support for two key features that made it easy to link other people’s email accounts. Both the Gmailify service and the ability to download mail via the POP3 protocol are ending. For many people, this means that their Gmail will stop automatically displaying new messages from other mailboxes.
Previously, Gmailify allowed you to connect, for example, a Yahoo or Outlook account and use it with the benefits of Gmail, such as mail sorting, spam filter or smart search. These features are now completely a thing of the past and linked accounts lose all the smart tools that regular users are used to.
POP3, an older technology for downloading mail from other servers, met a similar fate. Once this option is turned off, Gmail will no longer be able to retrieve third-party emails regularly. Therefore, if the user does not notice the change himself, he may feel that his mail has simply stopped.
IMAP as a necessity, not a salvation
now recommends moving to the more modern IMAP protocol, which allows email synchronization between devices. This is especially supported when using the Gmail mobile application on phones and tablets. Unfortunately, IMAP does not fully replace what users were used to.
The problem is that Gmail cannot fully connect foreign accounts via IMAP so that the folder structure and two-way synchronization are preserved. In practice, this means that external mailboxes cannot actually be connected to Gmail, only accessed separately.
The solution often remains automatic mail forwarding directly with the original e-mail provider. This will at least show new messages in Gmail, albeit without advanced features and full control.
What to do so that your e-mails do not disappear
The most important thing is to check your Gmail settings and see if you still have active POP3 accounts in it. After switching off, they stop working without further warning.
But the good news is that previously downloaded messages in Gmail will be preserved and one-time mail import is still possible. But for long-term functioning, it is definitely necessary to change habits. Gmail is thus gradually changing from a universal mail collector to a separate mailbox, and users must adapt to this before important messages stop coming to them completely.
