An AP-NORC poll revealed that Trump’s demands to take control of Greenland are dividing even his own Republicans, with as many as seven in ten Americans disapproving of the way Greenland is being handled. Significant generational differences show less support for his plan among younger Republicans.
About half of the members of his Republican Party do not agree with US President Donald Trump’s recent attempt to take control of Greenland. This was shown by a new survey by the AP agency and the NORC research center, the results of which were published on Friday. The head of the White House recently threatened to annex Greenland. The effort to get the largest island in the world under the control of the United States was justified by national security and the alleged presence of China and Russia in the area. But in January, he backtracked on his threat after he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the creation of a framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and the wider Arctic region.
Republican opinions divided
The AP noted that Trump’s voters and supporters are usually unwaveringly supportive of him on almost everything, but Greenland is an exception. According to the survey conducted from February 5 to 8 – that is, after Trump’s decision not to impose tariffs on imports from European countries that opposed his plans – about half of Republicans expressed disapproval of his original intention, while the other half supported it.
From the point of view of the Republican Party, these are the least favorable results among the key issues. Trump’s positions on the Greenland issue received significantly lower support than his approach to immigration, the economy or foreign policy in general. Seven to eight out of ten Republicans rate these areas positively.
Generational differences
Differences are also apparent between age groups. About 60 percent of Republicans under the age of 45 disapprove of Trump’s approach to Greenland, compared to about 40 percent of older Republicans.
Despite Trump’s significant steps toward gaining control of Greenland, his foreign policy support is unchanged. Around 40 percent of Americans still approve of her, a level that has been stable for several months.
