The removal of the Master case was late, but welcome. And, if the removal broadens the public’s focus beyond the , it may help them understand what the political ruse was built around Daniel Vorcaro’s financial ruse.
It happened, above all, in Congress, in states and municipalities. And, unless the contents of Vorcaro’s cell phone show us otherwise, it was mostly done by the right.
The two parties that declared are right-wing: Progressive Party () and . Former President of the Chamber Arthur Lira is from the PP. Lira appointed the minister (and former Republican deputy) who ran over Bacen in the Master case to the TCU. The president of the Senate, David Alcolumbre, is from União Brasil do Amapá, the state that put money into Vorcaro’s bank.
The deputy (PP-PI), who signs the note in support of Toffoli, is the author of an amendment to PEC 65, from 2003, which would have increased the coverage value of the Credit Guarantee Fund from R$250,000 to R$1 million.
Right-wing deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR), who in a meeting in Congress on November 30, 2022 called for a coup due to the application of “”, is the author of bill 4395, of 2024, which would also increase FGC coverage by the same amount. The two proposals were, obviously, attempts to save Banco Master by increasing the loss bill that would be paid by the FGC.
Of the 18 federal entities (states or municipalities) that placed retirees’ money in Banco Master, 17 were governed by the right. If we want to balance the score by taking into account the Bahia wing that has a relationship with a partner of Daniel Vorcaro, the score is 17 to 2.
The governor of the Federal District who tried to save Banco Master with public money from BRB is the right-wing Ibaneis Rocha. It was its police, under the command of Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice (currently in prison), who let the January 8th coup plotters destroy the Praça dos Três Poderes.
The press also reported that leftists such as Guido Mantega, and that the law firm of leftist Ricardo Lewandowski maintained a contract with Master while he was the leftist’s Minister of Justice. But so far there is no news of any action by the leftist Lula, or the leftist Haddad, in favor of the Master: There is no —so far, at least— a fraud by the leftist RioPrev, there is no leftist Master amendment, there is no leftist BRB operation.
As Marina Amaral rightly said, “Master’s bench is right-wing”.
Then you might ask: if that’s the case, why isn’t the left accusing the right for its central role in the scandal?
It’s sad, but it’s simple: because the left, like the right and the center, needs support from the Master bench to govern. As we will see in this year’s campaign, everyone also needs it to get elected.
This also helps explain why Flávio Bolsonaro, on the other side of the ideological spectrum, has avoided talking about the scandal. It’s not just because those involved have the same ideology as him, it’s not just out of gratitude to Toffoli for freeing him in the Queiroz case: it’s because no one governs without the Master bench.
