The imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi was transferred by the Iranian authorities to a prison in the north of Iran without prior notice.her family announced on Saturday. According to the AFP agency, this transfer took place at a time when concerns about Mohammadi’s health are growing, writes TASR.
- The transfer took place without prior notification of the family and the lawyer.
- She won the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.
Mohammadi was detained again in December in the city of Mashhad, where a memorial service was held for lawyer Khosrov Alikordi, who was found dead in his office a week before. Several human rights organizations called his death suspicious and hinted at the possible involvement of Iranian authorities. The Nobel Committee said on Wednesday that it was “appalled” by the physical attacks on the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Since her December detention, Mohammadi has been in the detention facility of the Ministry of Intelligence in Mashhad. Her husband, Taghí Rahmaní, who lives in Paris, announced on the X network that Iranian authorities have transferred her to a prison in the northern Iranian city of Zanjan.
She had been in this prison in the past, complaining of mistreatment. “This step was taken without informing her family or lawyer,” stated. According to him, the aim of this step is to “drive out and displace” Mohammadi. The activist’s foundation, which is run by her supporters and family, says she was transferred on Tuesday, and it was not until Saturday, in a telephone conversation with her lawyer, that the authorities allowed her to be informed of the transfer.
Since she was detained in December, she has been allowed only one phone call with her brother in Iran and now two more with her Iranian lawyer. He told X that in the phone call she told him about the violence during her detention, about the pressure of the interrogation and about the strong blows to the head. “These blows caused dizziness, double and blurred vision. His body is bruised and marked by physical assault,” he added.
Nobel Peace Prize 2023 awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and efforts to promote human rights and freedoms for all. As an activist, she openly spoke out, for example, against the death penalty in Iran or the mandatory wearing of the hijab by women.
This month, a court in Iran sentenced 53-year-old Mohammadi to six years in prison “for assembly and association with the aim of committing criminal acts, for one and a half years for propaganda and she was banned from traveling for two years”. In protest, she went on hunger strike in February.
