Aquaculture in Ria Formosa enters public consultation phase

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) invited interested parties to participate in the public consultation dedicated to the transition of the aquaculture sector to an inclusive and circular economy in the Ria Formosa, in the Algarve.

The Action Plan “establishes a strategic approach to guide the transition of the aquaculture sector towards an inclusive and circular economy in the Ria Formosa lagoon system”, reads the document released by .

According to the text, the action plan developed within the scope of the European project AZA4ICE “articulates scientific knowledge, active participation of ‘stakeholders’ and coordination of public policies, with the aim of promoting more sustainable aquaculture practices, efficient in the use of resources and socially responsible”.

Aquaculture is one of the main economic activities in the Ria Formosa

Currently, aquaculture, in particular seafood production, constitutes one of the main economic activities in the Ria Formosa.

This lagoon system is considered in the document as “a living laboratory for the implementation, testing and scalability of circular aquaculture solutions, where the balance between productivity and ecosystem preservation is a critical factor”.

The circular and inclusive economy is a development model that combines two structuring principles, the circularity of resources and social equity in the creation and distribution of value.

Contributions from interested parties must be sent to IPMA by March 6, 2026.
