At the invitation of the Minister of Agriculture and Sea, the european commissioner Christophe Han will go to the field to learn about the extent of the damage caused by the storms.
The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, will visit agricultural holdings on Tuesday, in the municipalities of Leiria and Pombal, affected by the storms that hit Portugal, the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea reported this Monday.
In a statement, the ministry informs that the visit takes place after the Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, had invited the commissioner to visit places heavily affected by the storms and Portugal has asked the European Commission to activate the crisis reserve for agriculturea mechanism with a total annual allocation to the European Union of 450 million euros.
According to a statement sent to newsrooms by Ministry of Agriculture and Sea, the request to activate the fund was “made in light of the preliminary estimates that point to losses in the order of 500 million euros in the agricultural sector“.
At these costs, the ministry shows more around 275 million euros in losses in the forestry sector.
The European Commissioner for Agriculture will meet with the Minister of Agriculture and then go to the field, which will allow “to understand the extent of the damage caused by the storms”, according to the ministry.
