According to the head of the Swedish military secret service, Russia has intensified its hybrid threats around Sweden and is ready to take greater risks. Therefore, the security situation in the region continues to deteriorate.
Russia has stepped up its hybrid threats and appears willing to take greater risks in areas around Sweden, the head of Sweden’s military intelligence service (MUST) Thomas Nilsson said on Tuesday. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
“Russia has, in certain cases, intensified its operations and increased its presence – and perhaps its willingness to take greater risks – in our vicinity,” Nilsson told AFP. According to him, Moscow will continue to do so regardless of whether it succeeds in the war in Ukraine or not. Both a win and a loss could lead to increased operations, he said after the Secret Service presented its annual threat report.
According to the head of MUST, the security situation in Sweden continues to deteriorate, similarly to previous years. Russia is the main “military threat to Sweden and NATO”, according to the report, which also warns of a potential increase in this threat. “Russia is strengthening its resources in the Baltic Sea region, which is strategically very important for it, both economically and militarily,” the Secret Service said. MUST said that this strengthening of Russia has “already begun”, but added that the “pace will be affected” by the course of the war in Ukraine, the state of the Russian economy and the country’s relations with China.
