The American actor Eric Dane () known to the general public for the role of Dr. died at the age of 53. Mark Sloan (“McSteamy”) in the popular medical series “Grey’s Anatomy” and for his performance as Cal Jacobs in the drama series “Euphoria”.
The news of his death was confirmed by his family to People Magazine, stating that the actor died on February 19 after a valiant battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The diagnosis was made in 2025.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by loving friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.
Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others fighting the same battle. He will be deeply missed and always remembered with love. Eric adored his fans and is eternally grateful for the outpouring of love and support he received.
The family requests privacy as they experience this difficult time,” his family said in a statement.
Eric Dane’s career
Eric Dane was born on November 9, 1972 in San Francisco, California. He started his career in the 1990s with appearances in television series, but his big recognition came in 2006 when he joined the cast of the popular medical series “Grey’s Anatomy”, playing plastic surgeon Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy”.
During his time in the series, he also participated in film productions such as “X-Men: The Last Stand”, “Marley & Me” and “Burlesque”.
After leaving the series, he continued with starring roles, including in the drama series ‘The Last Ship’.
In 2019, he took on the role of Cal Jacobs, the strict father of the character Nate, in the series “Euphoria”. He reprized the role in the second cycle and was to appear in the third and final cycle of the series as well.
He remained active until recently, last appearing last fall in an episode of “Brilliant Minds,” playing a firefighter suffering from ALS. Series creator Michael Grassi had stated that Dane was keen to participate as he was a fan of the production.
