The former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Witzel, decided to run as a pre-candidate for the state government in this year’s elections. In posts on social media, he claims to be “more experienced” and “more cautious”.
In a note sent to the press, Witzel confirmed that he had received an invitation from Aldo Rebelo, pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic for Christian Democracy (DC), to join the party.
“I understand that political movements generate noise and that there are voices, including within the party in the state, that sought to question the process. However, Aldo Rebelo’s words are clear and were reaffirmed by him: the invitation has been made, and the composition of the state directory will be conducted with the zeal, calm and transparency necessary so that we can build a strong ticket in line with the population’s desires.”
To CNN, Aldo Rebelo confirmed the invitation, but stated that there is still no set date for Witzel’s eventual affiliation.
In the same vein, the former governor declared, in a note, that he will begin conversations with the party’s state directory in the coming days, “seeking to listen to leaders, activists and all those who wish to build a serious alternative for Rio de Janeiro”.

“I was removed before any definitive conviction and without any right to defense. I faced a tough process and still maintained my defense within the legality, believing in Justice. I return more experienced, more cautious, with a deeper understanding of the real functioning of power and the innards of the Rio de Janeiro system.”
