Mário Mourão guaranteed that UGT will not make concessions if the Government does not. If there are no “points of consensus”, the secretary general warns that “there will be no agreement”.
The general secretary of UGT, Mário Mourão, said, this Monday, that he felt the government’s willingness to reach an agreement regarding the revision of the labor law. However, if all parties do not come closer or give in, Mário Mourão guarantees that UGT will not do that either.
“I once again felt ready to try to reach an agreement, but whether there is an agreement or not will depend on the effort that everyone must make to get closer. If there is no such approach, clearly there is no agreement”, guaranteed Mário Mourão, after this morning’s meeting with the Minister of Labor and the four business confederations.
At the entrance to the meeting, Mário Mourão simply said that he hoped the meeting would be quick. Then, on the way out, he emphasized again that All parties involved must be willing to make concessions so that “points of consensus” can be found. Without them, agreement is not possiblehighlighted the secretary general of UGT.
“There must be concessions for everyone. If there are not, the UGT will not make concessions. It is true that we have a barrier which are the guideposts and the red lines. We have to see whether or not there is the possibility of there being points of consensus, if there is not, naturally there will be no agreement.”
The meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security (MTSSS), in Lisbon, at 9:30 this Mondayserved to take stock of the technical meetings held between the Government, business confederations and UGT on the changes to labor lawwhich are being discussed in Social Concertation. The meeting .
In statements to Lusa, the secretary general of CGTP had accused the Government of trying to remove the inter-union from the discussion of changes in labor law and of using forms of discussion “completely outside” what has been the conduct of negotiation processes.
It is worth remembering that, last Wednesday, the Minister of Labor had called the UGT and the employers’ confederations to a meeting, but the meeting ended up being held without the presence of union representatives: the CGTP was not called by the Government and the announced that he would not participate in the meetingconsidering it “untimely” and regretting its disclosure when it informed the Government in good time of its unavailability on this date.
An official source from the ministry had told Lusa that “UGT was invited and did not show availability at any time this week”, but that “the Government remains fully available to talk” with the trade union central.
