It was announced this Wednesday that Marko Daniel will end his term as general director of the Barcelona institution in June, a position he assumed in 2018 and which he has held for two consecutive terms. The Board of Trustees expresses its recognition for the work it has done during this stage, while mentioning that it has been the most responsible in one of the most demanding and at the same time most fruitful moments in its history. The institution that Joan Miró left the city has just finished. During the coming weeks, the Board of Trustees will promote the selection process for the new general management.
Under the direction of Marko Daniel, the Fundació Joan Miró has grown as an institution, notes the statement sent to the press: “It has deepened its management model, expanded its international presence and strengthened its ties with the public in Catalonia and the world.” The major exhibition projects of recent years—(2022-23), (2023-24), Miró-Matisse (2024-25) and the exhibition focused on Miró and the United States (2025-26)—have placed the work of the Catalan painter in dialogue with capital figures and reference institutions.
Likewise, the Board of Trustees’ gratitude reflects the fact that Marko Daniel has helped the Foundation expand its network of international collaborations, has formalized new strategic sponsorship agreements and maintains projects in development with headquarters such as Shenzhen, São Paulo and Beijing. The note also highlights that it leaves as a legacy a reinforced structure in the operation of the museum.
Marko Daniel (Aachen, 1964) was head of public programs at the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain in London since 2006 when he landed at the Montjuïc museum, after winning the international competition called to replace , who was director of the Miró Foundation for 37 years, from 1980 to 2017, in the position.
