The government of Pernambuco must face budget restrictions starting this week, given the state’s failure to approve the 2026 budget.
The Executive’s project, sent in October 2025, was approved, but the governor (PSD) vetoed some points, still in December. Even so, the text was promulgated by the Alepe presidency.
Lyra vetoed a change that limited budget reallocation between departments to 10%. The government wanted to allow 20% of relocations by decree.
The fight ended up in court. The TJPE (Pernambuco Court of Justice) suspended the promulgation of the text and there is still no definition of which version prevails.
The assembly’s finance committee, led by the opposition, plans to vote on the matter on March 10. Behind the scenes, the government accuses the blocking of the agenda as ‘intentional’
Pernambuco is the only state that has not yet had the 2026 budget approved.
