Two Stars League matches, the country’s first division, which were scheduled for Saturday, had already been postponed
Iran’s attacks on a United States military base in Qatar had an immediate impact on local football. The Qatari Football Federation announced the suspension of all matches and competitions in the country for an indefinite period.
“Qatar Football Federation announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions and matches, with effect from today until further notice. The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Federation’s official channels.”
Two matches in the Stars League, the country’s first division, which were scheduled for Saturday, had already been postponed. The decision also places under uncertainty regarding the holding of the Final, confrontation between Argentina, champion of the Copa América, and Spain, winner of the European Cup, initially scheduled for March 27 in Qatar.
The regional scenario also mobilizes FIFA. The entity monitors developments in the conflict, which directly involves Iran – a team already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, which will have the United States, Canada and Mexico as hosts. The entity’s general secretary, Mattias Grafstrom, adopted a cautious tone when commenting on the case.
“I heard the news just like you did this morning. It would be premature to comment without knowing the details. But of course we will monitor the development of all problems around the world. Our focus is to have a safe World Cup, with everyone there,” he said.
Iran secured a place in the World Cup by leading Group A of the Asian Qualifiers and is in Group G, alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
Among the athletes who play in Qatari football, there were demonstrations on social media. Brazilians Lucas Veríssimo, Paulo Otávio and Giovani published messages asking for protection for the country after the attacks. “May Allah make this country safe,” they wrote in a joint publication.
