In a phone call, China expresses support for Iran in defending its sovereignty and interests

China has declared support for Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty, independence and dignity, while also expressing support for the protection of Iranian legitimate interests.

The support came after a telephone call between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, at the request of the Iranian representative, according to a statement released this Monday by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China’s statement cited Araghchi as reporting on the current situation in the region, stating that the United States had launched a second war against Iran during ongoing negotiations between the two countries.

“Although positive progress has been made in the current negotiations, the US actions violate all international law and go beyond Iran’s red lines. Iran has no choice but to defend itself with all its strength. China has publicly expressed its stance of impartiality and justice and hopes to continue playing a positive role in preventing the escalation of regional tensions,” the Chinese statement said.

Wang Yi said China urged the US and Israel to immediately cease military operations to prevent further escalation of tensions and prevent the conflict from spreading across the Middle East.

He expressed confidence that Iran, given the current serious and complex situation, will maintain national and social stability, address the legitimate concerns of its neighbors, and safeguard the security of Chinese citizens and institutions in Iran. Araghchi stated that Iran is willing to do everything possible to ensure the security of Chinese personnel and institutions, according to the statement.

According to the Iranian representative, during the call, the Chinese foreign minister offered, on behalf of the government and people of China, condolences for the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, supreme leader of the Islamic Revolution.

The Iranian foreign minister also mentioned the deaths of Iranian children and girls – including 171 school-age girls at a school in the city of Minab – as well as attacks on hospitals, highlighting the international community’s responsibility to firmly condemn US and Israeli military aggression and the deaths of Iranian civilians.
