The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, argued that the only lasting solution for Iran is diplomatic and classified developments in the Middle East as “worrying”. The statement was given at a press conference this Monday (2) about the relationship between the European Union (EU) and Switzerland.
Von der Leyen, who said she had spoken to leaders of Middle Eastern and European countries, highlighted that the situation is “volatile”, but that hope focuses on the opportunity for Iranians to establish a new government. “We need to act so that there is a de-escalation. In the last few hours, we have witnessed numerous attacks. I strongly condemn these attacks by Iran and those close to it”, he highlighted.
For the president of the commission, stability in the region is the most important factor, which means a “credible” transition in Iran and a pause in Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic programs.

Von der Leyen also stated that Europeans will discuss the situation in the region in the coming hours because the EU needs to “be prepared”.
