“Iran tried to kill President Trump, and President Trump had the last laugh,” the Defense Secretary said at a press conference.

Washington has known “for a long time that the Iran intended to kill President Trump or other American officials.”

Attacking those responsible for this plan was not the main objective of American operations and Trump never raised the issue, Hegseth said after reports that indicated the risk of assassination was one of the factors that led the United States president to trigger the war.

“I made sure, along with others, that those responsible for this were on the hit list at the time,” Hegseth added, without providing further details.

US officials previously accused Iran of trying to assassinate Trump to avenge the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in Iraq in 2020, ordered by Trump during his first presidential term.
