While Tehran accuses Europe of complicity in the American-Israeli operation, Brussels, together with the countries of the Persian Gulf (GCC), confirmed the right of the Arab states to defend themselves against Iranian missile attacks.
European Union countries “sooner or later will pay” for Europe’s silence in the face of the “violation of international law” represented by the US and Israeli attack on Iran. Esmáil Bakaí, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this in an interview with the Spanish television station TVE.
- A spokesman for Iranian diplomacy called the attack by the US and Israel a violation of international law.
- He claims that if Europe remains silent, the countries will pay for it.
- The European Union and the countries of the Persian Gulf jointly called for diplomatic dialogue.
“Those who remain silent will be complicit in this injustice… If Europe remains silent in the face of this violation of international law, sooner or later all countries will pay for it. No UN member state can be indifferent,” Bakáí declared.
A call for dialogue
Meanwhile, the European Union and the Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Persian Gulf (GCC) called on Thursday for dialogue and diplomacy in solving the crisis in the Middle East. At the same time, they emphasized that the countries of the Persian Gulf have the right to defend themselves against Iran’s attacks.
“The ministers reiterated their commitment to regional stability and called for the protection of civilians and full respect for international law,” the EU and GCC said in a joint statement after a video conference of the foreign ministers of the two blocs.
Escalation of the conflict
They also agreed on a “joint diplomatic effort to reach a durable solution” that would prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and allow the Iranian people to decide their future.
The United States and Israel launched coordinated air and missile strikes on Iranian military and strategic targets on Saturday, February 28. Iran responded with massive retaliatory missile and drone attacks on targets in Israel and on US military facilities in several Middle Eastern countries. However, civilian infrastructure is also the target of Iranian attacks.
