I want to be an alternative to the “artificial division of the country”, says Aldo Rebelo

Pre-candidate for Planalto for DC, former minister states that “what moves the population is the search for solutions”

The former minister and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic for (Christian Democracy), said he wants “to be an alternative to the artificial division of the country, which is increasingly rejected”. According to him, the victory of “several candidates who did not fit the bill of polarization” in the 2024 municipal elections is a sign that the population is looking for options.

“If the problems are common, why can’t the solution be too?” he declared in an interview with the magazine published this Friday (6.mar.2026). “What moves the population is the search for solutions to the challenges of survival”he stated.

The names of the president (PT) and the senator (PL-RJ) are in the lead in the dispute for Planalto.

Rebelo declared that, in the October elections, “the alternative has not yet appeared”. He mentioned the PSD’s internal dispute to choose who will be its candidate. The party has 3 pre-candidates: the governors, from Rio Grande do Sul; , from Paraná; and, from Goiás.

“The problem is that if you have 3, you have none. I’ve been out of public life for a long time. Not many people know that I’m a candidate. My hope is that the debates and interviews can provide a platform that makes me a little better known”said Aldo Rebelo.

According to him, in Brazil, “ideas have always had more strength than acronyms”since “the value of subtitles was greatly depreciated by the evils of politics”.

Rebelo stated that “the left is losing touch with popular sentiment and becoming a secular, academic middle class”. He declared that people voted for former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) “because they imagine him to be the bearer of values that the population defends”.

He stated: “Nationalism is a natural thing for our population. Bolsonaro mirrored this. Likewise, family values.”

These: “A part of the left thinks that the family is a conservative institution. It is a serious mistake. For the poor, the family is the welfare state. (…) The family is social protection. The left has lost, or part of it has lost, this perspective.”

The pre-candidate declared that, in his view, “there was no coup attempt” in the 2022 elections. “What happened did not meet any of the requirements of a coup manual. A coup needs institutional support. In the case of 1964, the political parties, I think with the exception of the PTB, supported the coup, the relevant governors supported it, what was excellent in Brazilian journalism supported it”these.

According to him, the (Federal Supreme Court) “I needed a pretext to remove President Lula from the 2018 election and then I needed another to remove the [ex] President Bolsonaro of the 2026 election”.

Asked if he is in favor of amnesty for those convicted of attempted coup d’état, Rebelo replied: “Amnesty is a Brazilian tradition, but it seems that the issue today is also ideologized, it is not for everyone. This does not pacify Brazil. You do not do amnesty to exonerate someone, but to overcome a liability and deal with what is most relevant for the country”.
