The truth is No US president has had Spain so present in decades. This in almost any circumstance would be very good for our country, but it happens that, for the worse… although Pedro Sánchez has found a vein in his opposition to the Republican magnate.
Since he returned to the White House and was involved in that gaffe by confusing Spain with one of the countries BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), Trump made it clear that Spain was not exactly his right eye. But everything broke loose as a result of Sánchez’s refusal to accept the imposition of 5% of GDP for Defense within NATO.
It was as a result of the summit from the end of June in The Hague When Donald Trump started his campaign harassment and demolition against the Government of Spainin a constant of disqualifications, warnings and even resounding threats… although very difficult to execute. Along the way, the 47th president of the United States is giving us a very peculiar ‘dictionary’ of offenses that now reaches a ‘special edition’ due to disagreements over the war in Iran.
With the ‘p’, what Spain means for the Trump Administration
Given the first financing disagreements with Sánchez, Trump surprised. It was before the summit in The Hague, which came ‘hot’ precisely because of his protests. In reality, that term, “problematic”, was already used in a Washington-Madrid ‘clash’ during the first terms of both Trump and Sánchez.
Back in 2025, the Republican celebrated the achievement of an “almost unanimous” agreement around 5% and soon launched himself against Moncloa. It was right at the end of the meeting when he announced that he would make Spain, which he described as an ally, pay “double” “terrible” e “unfair”.
Something intolerable for his ego, so much so that in October he still had it in mind. In the company of the Finnish president, Trump dropped that perhaps it would be necessary to explain to him why we are “lagging behind.” Obviously, his bravado was completely useless, because expulsion can only be decreed by the unanimity of the rest of the members.
But he continued. New promises of special tariffs arrived in response to “unfair” and “disrespectful” of the behavior of a country that he even said was “very protected” in NATO whatever it does. Little by little, the ‘Spanish question’ was leaving his agenda until the war with Iran and the Government’s veto of the US using the bases in Rota and Morón de la Frontera arrived. A ‘candy’ for you, also in the White House.
In your speech together with a hieratic Friedrich Merz, Trump described the gesture as “inamistoso” or “very unfriendly” on the part of some leaders “terrible”. We are left with the consolation that at least he added that we are “a fantastic town”…that is, after saying that “they have nothing that the US needs”.
This Thursday, he added a couple of new terms, that of country “loser” in contrast to all the “winning” allies that the US has in NATO and in the world, and that of a country “hostile”for not supporting efforts to combat the ayatollah regime. As in previous cases, the adjectives have arrived empty, with no other reference than a forceful headline.
Let’s not rule out that in a display of ingenuity, Trump discovers that Moronwithout accent, means “fool” or “imbecile” in English. Let it be insulting, at least it will help to learn English.
