Thyago’s family suspects that his death may have been due to ‘medical negligence’
Thyago da Silva Severino, aged 34, died last Saturday (28) suspect of a perforation in the intestine after a colonoscopy in a private clinic in the municipality of Cerejeiras, in Rondônia (RO). His death occurred at the Vilhena Regional Hospital, while he was still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
According to Thyago’s brother, Amizael Severino, the victim lived with an autoimmune kidney disease for 20 years, nephrotic syndrome. According to the Ministry of Health, the disorder is characterized by “excessive loss of protein in the urine”, resulting in swelling and the need for regular medical monitoring.
To maintain an active life, Thyago took immunosuppressant medications (which decrease the activity of the immune system) and, due to his condition, he also ended up contracting the herpes virus which resulted in a type of cancer called “Kaposi’s Sarcoma”, which affects the activities of the linings of blood and lymphatic vessels.
Despite the complications, Thyago’s brother reported that the diseases were controlled and the victim worked normally and lived independently. Only when he needed exams and chemotherapy sessions did he have the company of someone from the family. “Either my mother or I always accompanied him to get support during exams, but other than that he had a completely independent life”, highlights Amizael.
Exam day
On Friday (27), to undergo the colonoscopy to which he was regularly subjected due to the disease, the victim chose to take the exam in the city where he lived, in Cerejeiras (RO), in a private clinic and with a doctor who already followed Thyago’s case. “The clinic is very respected here in the city and my brother I had already seen this doctor a few times.”the brother explained about the professional who carried out the exam.
However, after attempting to perform the exam, the doctor informed Thyago’s mother that it was not possible to complete the procedure due to a “intestinal complication” of the patient and that he would need to be taken to a hospital. Amizael said that at this point the doctor had already reported the perforation in Thyago’s intestine, but did not explain its severity.
After being rescued at Hospital São Lucas in Cerejeiras, he had to be transferred to Vilhena Regional Hospital on Friday night, where he underwent immediate surgery and was then taken to the ICU. Only then did the doctors tell the family that the drilling had been “very big” and harming a large part of the intestine. On Saturday morning, Thyago passed away.
Report and alert
The family reported the case to the Civil Police in search of justice and awareness. “My goal is not to cause fear in those who need a colonoscopy, but to raise awareness, to make people look for experienced and trustworthy doctors,” said Amizael.
Thyago’s brother added that he at least hopes for justice. “If it is proven that it was not negligence or medical malpractice, we will be at peace. But if not, We hope justice is served“, he concluded.
When contacted, the Civil Police reported that the investigation into “possible medical negligence” has already been opened. “As starting points and first steps in the investigation, the patient’s complete medical records have already been requested and the other necessary steps are being taken to clarify the case.”
