The former goalkeeper GomesCruzeiro’s idol and with a long stint with the Brazilian National Team, sees Rogério Ceni, Bahia coach, as a possible successor to Carlo Ancelotti in charge of the Brazilian National Team.
“Today, a guy who I believe could be the future of the Brazilian team is Rogério Ceni, for example. A guy who finished playing and went to do his coaching course there in England. Rogério today, speaking honestly, is very evolved in this matter of world football, not just Brazilian football”, he assessed in an interview with CNN Esportes S/A this Sunday (8).
Gomes spoke about the reasons that led him to take charge. For the former goalkeeper, the last generation of coaches failed to look at world football and not just Brazilian football. According to the former Tottenham and Watford man, something similar to what happened in England.
“Maybe we lost the timing a little bit to see what was happening with world football, not just with Brazilian football. We stayed a lot here (in Brazil)”, he explained.
I remember that when I arrived in England, we asked the players: ‘Look, do you know that athlete who plays in Germany? I could be playing for Bayern.’ ‘Oh no, I don’t know.’ But if you asked a player from England’s third division, he would know. But England said, ‘look, if we don’t open our minds and start following world football as a whole, we’re going to be in trouble too.’ So much so that the question of a coach there for them is difficult. Today it is a German who is the coach of the English national team, for example.
“This issue of just staying there and looking at local football and not seeing what’s happening around the world, that’s what happened here with the coaches and those younger people who were coming, caused them to be left behind. Not for lack of quality, because I believe that the Brazilian coach has a lot of quality, he has a wonderful vision of the game”, he added.
More names for the Selection
Despite this delay in relation to other football schools, Gomes believes that the new generation of Brazilian coaches has names that can change this story.
“I believe that in terms of Brazilian football in relation to coaches, we are going through a transition. Those who are older are handing over the baton today to the younger ones. […] (Rafael Guanaes), I think he’s still young, he’s a young coach. I already see potential in him,” he explained.
“These are coaches who are coming with this vision. Because they see that football is like this, the majority of Brazilian players are playing outside the country. What is the pace at which these athletes are there? What do these athletes do there so they can also perform here in the Brazilian team?”, he explained.
Ancelotti: an old acquaintance
In addition to praising the new generation of Brazilian coaches, Gomes also praised . The former goalkeeper recalled the times he had to face the Italian during his European days.
I played against him (Ancelotti). It was tough. I played some matches. He was at Milan at the time and then Chelsea. At Milan, we played some good games against, I was at PSV, he was at Milan. Always very difficult teams to face. Mainly a question of marking, right? Italian football has this issue. So, let’s assume, a dead ball was very difficult for us to score a goal.
“He’s a fantastic coach. We have to be very happy to have him here in Brazil, to have accepted this mission”, he concluded.
