A luminous phenomenon in the sky over Germany generated alerts on social media and was even mistaken for a possible Iranian missile. Hours later, authorities confirmed that the object was, in fact, a meteorite fragment that hit a house in the city of Koblenz, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The impact occurred around 7pm on Sunday (8), local time (3pm in Brasília). The fragment pierced the roof of the residence and opened a hole the approximate size of a football in one of the rooms of the house. Despite the structural damage, no one was injured.
“There were people in the building, but not in this room,” said Benjamin Marx, head of operations at the Koblenz Fire Department.

Fireball in the sky sparked speculation
Before hitting the property, the object was seen crossing the sky like a bright fireball, with a luminous trail visible hundreds of kilometers away.
Reports from residents and videos circulating on social media fueled speculation that the phenomenon could be related to an Iranian missile.
Police in the city of Kaiserslautern, also located in Rhineland-Palatinate, confirmed that the hypothesis was circulated on digital platforms.
Later, however, authorities ruled out any connection with military activity.
According to firefighters, the meteorite probably fragmented when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere. Therefore, there is still the possibility that other pieces fell in nearby areas.
To date, however, no new damage has been recorded.
