US says PCC and CV are “significant threats to regional security”

The United States Department of State confirmed that the American government sent advisors to the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to Brazil to consult Brazilian authorities on the risks of the operations and possible expansion of the First Command of the Capital.

The information was obtained by the newspaper The Globewho questioned the American government about concerns regarding Brazilian criminal factions. In response, the State Department sent a note stating that “the United States considers that Brazilian criminal organizations, including the PCC and the CV, represent significant threats to regional security due to their involvement in drug trafficking, violence and transnational crime.”

The ministry also warned that it will not anticipate possible terrorist designations or deliberations on classification, and that the United States is “fully committed to taking appropriate action against foreign groups involved in terrorist activity.”

US says PCC and CV are “significant threats to regional security”

Yesterday afternoon, the president of the Workers’ Party, criticized the US attempt to classify factions operating in Brazil as terrorists. For him, the proposal defended by American President Donald Trump could open the way for foreign interventions in Brazilian territory, in addition to the application of economic sanctions if the United States considers that its interests are being threatened.

Edinho stated that United States legislation began to allow actions in other countries after the attacks of September 11, 2001. According to him, classifying a group as a terrorist organization expands the American government’s ability to act outside its territory.

Lula intends to make an official visit to the United States to meet with Donald Trump, possibly this semester. There is an expectation that the matter will be brought up by the Brazilian president to avoid classification.

If PCC and Comando Vermelho are formally designated as terrorist organizations by the United States, the American government will be able to apply a series of legal and financial measures against the groups.

These include blocking financial assets, banning transactions and migratory restrictions against members or people associated with organizations.

American legislation also makes it a crime, within the United States, to provide any form of material support to groups classified as terrorist, including financing, training, providing services or providing equipment.

Additionally, the designation expands the use of intelligence instruments and operational capabilities of the US Department of Defense, which may include unilateral actions depending on the interpretation of the legislation.
