Tehran largely maintains a blockade of the strait for vessels, and the route is effectively closed
O Iran authorized ships from some countries to cross the Strait of Hormuzsaid the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, Majid Takht Ravanchi, this Thursday (12), while the road remains effectively closed during the war with the United States and Israel.
Tehran maintainsin large part,but the deputy minister declared, in an interview with AFP, that some countries requested permission to use this route and that Iran “cooperated with them”.
“We believe that the countries that joined the aggression should not benefit of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz”, emphasized Takht Ravanchi, who denied reports that the Islamic republic had placed mines in this strategic passage for the transit of oil and gas.
The deputy minister also explained that Iran wants to ensure that it is not forced into another war in the future.
“When the war started in June last year, after 12 days there was a supposed cessation of hostilities… but after eight or nine months, they regrouped and did it all over again,” he said, referring to the United States and Israel.
“We don’t want to be treated like this again in the future“, he emphasized.
After the 12-day war in June 2025, Israel and the United States launched attacks against Iran on February 28 of this year, , and triggering a war that spread throughout the Middle East.
O Iran responded by attacking Israeli and American interests throughout the region.
“Before the start of the war, on several occasions, we informed our neighbors that if the United States attacked Iran, all American assets and bases would be legitimate targets for Iran,” said Takht Ravanchi.
“We are acting in self-defense. We will continue to act in self-defense as long as necessary,” he said.
