After Easter, the same problem remains in many households, a bowl full of boiled eggs. Most often they end up in , but there is also a much more interesting way to use them. In Great Britain, they have been used for generations to prepare a dish that belongs to popular picnic classics. It is called scotch eggs.

At first glance, it is a simple idea, hard-boiled eggs wrapped in seasoned meat and . In reality, however, the result is surprisingly rich and flavorful.

A picnic classic from British parks

Scotch eggs are mainly served as a cold picnic food or as part of cold plates in Britain. The tradition dates back to the 18th century, when similar dishes were prepared as a practical snack for traveling.

The combination of meat, egg and crispy crust creates a meal that is filling yet portable. That is why Scotch eggs are still found in British delicatessens, markets or pubs.

Interestingly, there are many variations. Some use mildly seasoned pork, others add herbs, mustard or even cheese.

“Different herbs or a pinch of smoked paprika also work well. And if you want a lighter version, you can bake them in the oven instead of frying them. The crust will remain crispy and the food is not so heavy,” advises chef David Šlapák.

A simple recipe that you can make at home

There is nothing complicated about preparing Scotch eggs. Wrapping the eggs in the meat to form a compact ball takes the most work. And those who want to avoid this can prepare meatloaf with an egg, which is very similar to this recipe.

Scotch Eggs Recipe

Raw materials:

  • 6 hard-boiled eggs
  • 400 g of minced pork
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 egg for coating
  • 100 g breadcrumbs
  • oil for frying

Procedure:

First, peel the hard-boiled eggs. Put the minced meat in a bowl, add finely chopped onion, mustard, salt and pepper and mix everything well.

Divide the meat mixture into six equal parts. Flatten each part in the palm of your hand and wrap the egg in it so that the meat is evenly spread over the entire surface.

Coat the prepared balls first in beaten egg and then in breadcrumbs.

Fry them in a pan or in a higher layer of oil for about 6 to 8 minutes, until the surface is golden and the meat is done.

After frying, let the eggs drain briefly on a paper towel.

They are best lukewarm or cold

Scotch eggs are often served split in half to reveal the yolk in the middle. They taste great with mustard, pickles or a simple salad. It is also suitable for a picnic, a cold buffet or as a hearty snack on a trip.
