Portugal hides several places where nature and history meet in surprising ways, often far from the most popular destinations. Between mountains, valleys and rivers, there are river beaches that reveal landscapes with unique characteristics and that continue to attract visitors due to their natural beauty and peaceful environment, as is the case with this Portuguese beach, which we will tell you about next.
One of these examples is in Serra da Estrela. The Loriga river beach, located in the municipality of Seia, stands out not only for the surrounding landscape but also for the rare geological features that make this place different from any other in the country, according to the blog.
A valley shaped by glaciers
The Loriga river beach is located at approximately 800 meters above sea level, in the heart of Serra da Estrela. According to the source mentioned above, it is considered one of the most beautiful in the country and is different because it is located in an ancient glacial valley, something unique in Portugal.
This scenario results from natural phenomena that occurred during the last glaciation. Even today, it is possible to observe traces of this period, such as erratic blocks and rock formations shaped by the ice that marked the region’s landscape.
The water that feeds the bathing area comes from the highest areas of the mountain and runs along the Loriga River, forming small natural lagoons along the way. The altitude and the absence of sources of pollution help to guarantee clean, fresh water, which is highly sought after in the warmer months.
Despite the strong natural component, the river beach has infrastructure that makes visiting easier. There is a bar for light meals, picnic tables set up under the shade of trees and a playground. During the bathing season, the area is guarded and there are wooden stairs and platforms that allow safer access to the water.
In recent years, the municipality has sought to balance tourism promotion with environmental preservation. Among the measures adopted are controlling water quality, protecting local vegetation and limiting construction in the surrounding area.
Distinctions that reinforce your reputation
The combination of natural landscape and good environmental conditions has guaranteed the Loriga river beach several recognitions. According to the same source, in 2012, the place was a finalist in the 7 Wonders – Beaches of Portugal competition, in the river beaches category. More recently, it received the “Gold Quality Beach” award granted by Quercus in 2022.
The following year, in 2023, it was also awarded the Blue Flag, a seal that recognizes environmental quality, safety and support conditions for visitors.
A village marked by mountain tradition
The river beach is next to the village of Loriga, a town with a strong historical identity. The terraces built on the slopes over generations show the efforts of local populations to transform a rocky valley into cultivable land. In the streets of the village you can find granite houses, old churches and little shops that sell typical regional products from Serra da Estrela, such as cheese, sausages and other artisanal products, according to Visit Seia.
Throughout the year, the landscape takes on different tones. In summer, the intense green of the vegetation dominates, while in autumn warmer colors appear. In winter, when snow covers the highest areas of the mountain, the scenery takes on a completely different appearance.
