Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz is open to everyone except US allies.
“The Strait of Hormuz is open. It’s only closed to oil tankers and ships belonging to our enemies and their allies,” he said in an interview with the American news program MS Now. “It’s not closed, but it’s closed to American and Israeli ships,” he added.
The Persian chancellor reinforced that vessels from other countries are free to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, where around 20% of global oil production passes. He acknowledged, however, that many ships prefer not to pass through the region due to security concerns, but said that would not be Iran’s responsibility. “This has nothing to do with us,” he reiterated.
