British police have charged two men with tracking targets linked to the Jewish community for Iran. The case is intended to show an uncompromising approach to threats.

British police have charged two men with tracking people and places linked to the Jewish community for Iran. TASR informs about this according to Thursday’s AFP report.

  • British police have charged two men with spying for Iran.
  • They tracked Jewish people and places in the UK.
  • The accused are awaiting trial in London, they have Iranian citizenship.
  • The goal was to collect information for the foreign service.

The men are aged 40 and 22, with one holding both Iranian and British citizenship and the other only Iranian. The UK authorities charged them late on Wednesday with making contacts that could have helped foreign intelligence between July 9 and August 15 last year. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) specified that the charges relate to Iran. Both men are due to appear in court in London later on Thursday.

The investigation is supposed to be reassurance

“The charge relates to carrying out activities in the UK such as gathering information and carrying out target reconnaissance,” said Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS’s Special Crimes and Counter-Terrorism Unit.

“We are fully aware that the public – and the Jewish community in particular – will be concerned, but I hope this investigation will reassure them that we will not hesitate to act if we find there is a potential threat to their safety,” Deputy Commissioner Vicki Evans added.

AFP adds that British police, MI5 counter-intelligence and members of parliament have long warned of the growing threat from Iran, which has been at war with Israel and the United States since February 28.
