The Italian and Danish prime ministers warn of a new migration wave in the event of an escalation of the conflict with Iran. Before the EU summit, they are demanding vigorous preventive steps.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned of a possible new wave of migration to Europe in the event of an escalation of the conflict with Iran. This follows from their joint letter addressed to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and other EU leaders, which they published before Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels.
As reported by the ANSA agency, the prime ministers drew attention to the risk of a repeat of the migration crisis of 2015, when millions of people fleeing the war in Syria came to Europe. According to them, such a development would represent not only a humanitarian disaster, but also a threat to the security and cohesion of the Union.
The risk of a new crisis
Meloni and Frederiksen emphasized that it is more effective to help refugees directly in their regions of origin. At the same time, they called on the European Commission to examine the mechanisms enabling emergency measures to limit migration to be activated in the event of a worsening situation. “This time we must be ready and act,” the prime ministers said in a joint letter.
