Viana criticizes STF and says that CPMI will not accept loss of prerogatives

In a kind of manifesto published on social media this Thursday (19), the president of the CPMI of the INSS, senator Carlos Viana (Podemos-MG), (Supreme Federal Court) and said that the collegiate will not accept losing its “institutional prerogatives”.

In the publication that, according to the senator, was also sent to the Supreme Court, Viana says that the recent decisions of the STF, which released people invited or summoned to give statements to the collegiate, lead to a “serious, objective and urgent concern”. According to the parliamentarian, these decisions “have been limiting the exercise of a constitutional prerogative of the Brazilian Parliament”.

“The Constitution leaves no room for doubt. The CPIs have investigative powers specific to judicial authorities. This is not symbolic. It is a real oversight instrument, created to protect society when there are signs of abuse, fraud or harm to the public interest,” he wrote.

Viana cited as an example the invitation to Leila Pereira, president of Palmeiras and Banco Crefisa, who would testify on Wednesday (18) to the CPMI as a witness. , from the STF, however, released her from being present at the collegiate.

“The person who defines the scope of the investigation is Parliament. It is the Commission who decides who should be heard. Taking away this power is, in practice, emptying the CPI. There is no investigation without freedom to investigate”, he said.

“The National Congress cannot be reduced to a spectator of investigations that it itself is responsible for conducting. It is recorded that this CPMI will not accept the loss of its constitutional prerogatives”, added Viana.
