Alesp says that deputies’ opinions are inviolable – 03/19/2026 – Panel

After the state deputy in the plenary, Alesp (Legislative Assembly of São Paulo) stated that parliamentarians are protected by the Constitution when expressing themselves. The practice, known as blackface, is considered racist.

“The Constitution ensures that parliamentarians are inviolable, civilly and criminally, for their opinions, words and votes, especially when expressed in plenary. This is a guarantee designed to ensure the freedom necessary to fully exercise their mandate”, says the note sent to the Panel.

When contacted, the President of the Assembly, André do Prado (PL), did not respond. He has remained silent since the episode, which occurred this Wednesday (18).
