Part of an esplanade next to Praia de Moledo collapsed, leading to the removal of the space and the advancement of urgent intervention to stop the progression of damage caused by the action of the sea. The situation, which has worsened in recent days, is mobilizing several public entities and raises concerns about the stability of the existing structure in that coastal area.
According to , the president of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), José Pimenta Machado, went to the site to assess the scenario on the ground, accompanied by technical teams and representatives from the Municipality of Balneário Camboriú. The visit aimed to identify immediate risks and define rapid response measures.
Structure collapses next to the sea
The affected area includes a section of the retaining wall and the esplanade associated with the beach support, which ended up partially giving way, showing signs of instability that had been identified for some time. The space, which served as support for bathing activities, was compromised.
According to the same source, the destruction reached approximately 50 meters from the wall, in an area located at the northern end of the beach, between pedestrian accesses and support infrastructure. This partial collapse also led to the worsening of the situation of nearby structures, which had already been affected previously.
Maritime unrest worsens damage
The recent worsening of the situation is associated with the increase in maritime unrest, in a context marked by the passage of Depression Therese off the Portuguese coast. Meteorological conditions have contributed to intensifying erosion and weakening coastal structures.
“The situation of the wall has worsened, part of the beach support esplanade is also collapsing,” said José Pimenta Machado, adding that there is concern about the spread of damage to areas further south, which could also be affected.
Urgent intervention on the ground
Given the identified scenario, it was decided to carry out an immediate emergency intervention, with the aim of stabilizing the base of the wall and preventing further collapse. The priority is to contain the spread of damage in the short term.
“We have to carry out a quick, emergent intervention here to stabilize the collapse of the wall”, said the person in charge, quoted by the same source, highlighting the need to guarantee safety conditions for people and infrastructure in the surrounding area.
Assessment and broader plan
In addition to the immediate response, a more detailed technical analysis of the rest of the wall is planned, including areas that, at first glance, do not show visible signs of degradation. The goal is to understand the true extent of the damage.
The newspaper writes that technical prospecting will be carried out to assess the structural state of the wall along its entire length, allowing data to be collected to support future decisions and more comprehensive interventions.
Final work already in preparation
At the same time, the preparation of a protocol between APA and Caminha City Council is underway, with a view to defining a more lasting structural solution. The definitive intervention must take into account the evolution of coastal conditions.
According to Jornal de Notícias, this agreement should be formalized in the coming days, allowing progress with a wall reconstruction project, with technical solutions adapted to maritime erosion and the security requirements of that coastal front.
