Elon Musk, CEO da Tesla e SpaceX
Elon Musk’s next big project will cost 20 billion dollars. The tycoon believes that it will be possible within two or three years to launch AI chips into space and operate them on satellites in space.
Elon Musk plans to build a huge chip factory which, according to , will “eclipse all other facilities of this type on the planet”.
The tycoon believes that expanding computing power is the way to solve complex physics challenges, accelerate the future of humanity and make us a multi-planetary species.
With this objective, Terafab is a partnership between its companies Tesla, SpaceX and xAI to create the largest integrated chip design and manufacturing facility. According to the same magazine, the project will begin at the Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, Texas, which is Tesla’s headquarters.
The idea is to produce around 50 times the amount of chips specifically for AI applications that all the world’s main manufacturers (such as TSMC and Samsung) produce annually. Musk estimates that this corresponds to about 20 GW of computing. Therefore, Terafab, as the name suggests, will aim to achieve 1 terawatt of computing with your chips.
The project is expected to cost more than 20 billion dollars and that produces two types of chips.
Chip design, lithography, manufacturing, memory production, packaging and (still) tests will all take place under the same roof, something Musk claims has never happened before.
Terafab is targeting production numbers of several billion high-end AI chips per year, starting with small batches this year and increasing volume in 2027.
