Fire in a nursing home in the Žilina district: Firefighters saved dozens of seniors from the flames

Firefighters intervened on Monday night at a fire in the building of the Social Services Center (DSS) and facilities for seniors in the village of Varín (Žilina district). As confirmed for TASR by the spokeswoman of the Regional Directorate of the Fire and Rescue Service (HaZZ) in Žilina, Mária Pohanková Zahatlanová, during the fire, four people inhaled combustion products.

The fire was reported to the fire department half an hour after midnight and HAZ members from the fire stations in Žilina and Terchová, members of the HAZ Rescue Brigade in Žilina and members of the Voluntary Fire Brigade of the village of Varín were sent to the scene.

“After arriving at the scene of the fire, the firemen discovered that the fire started in a room on the first floor of the facility, in which there were 58 residents and staff. The fire was extinguished before the arrival of the unit by the employees of the facility using a powder fire extinguisher,” explained Pohanková Zahatlanová.

Firefighters in self-contained breathing apparatus searched, checked and ventilated the premises with a positive pressure fan. “During the fire, four people inhaled combustion fumes. Firefighters provided the people with pre-medical first aid. Subsequently, one person was taken to a medical facility for further treatment, the others were treated on the spot.” added the fire department spokeswoman. The owner of the device suffered direct material damage, preliminarily estimated at 2,000 euros. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
