An unusual fact attracted the attention of residents and traders in Jataí, in , in recent days. Marijuana plants were found growing in the median of Avenida Veriano de Oliveira Lima, one of the main and busiest arteries in the central region of the city. The location of the plants, surrounded by an intense flow of vehicles and pedestrians, was surprising due to the audacity of the exhibition in a public space.
The origin of the containers where the plants grew adds a layer of complexity to the case. According to information from the Criminal Police, the decorative vases were made by inmates at the local prison, as part of a resocialization program focused on work and learning skills. After production, the items were passed on to City Hall to form part of the city’s landscaping and urban decoration project.

The Flagrant
The discovery occurred during a routine inspection. Criminal police officers passing through the avenue identified that one of the exposed vases not only contained the expected ornamental vegetation, but also growing marijuana plants. Immediately, the plants were removed from the site and sent to the Civil Police Station.

Investigation and Inspection
So far, authorities have not identified who carried out the planting, whether the seed was already in the soil used to make the pots or whether someone took advantage of the public exposure to cultivate the herb. The episode raises questions about the inspection of public spaces and the monitoring of the city’s green areas.

The Civil Police opened an investigation to investigate the case and identify those responsible. Meanwhile, the resocialization program remains under observation to understand whether there was any failure in the delivery or maintenance process of the decorative pieces sent to the municipal administration.
